How to Install a Western Toilet Step by Step

Installing a western toilet at home can be done easily if you follow the correct steps. In this guide, we will explain the toilet installation process step by step.

Toilet Installation

Required skill level: Intermediate
Estimated time: About one hour

Tools and Materials Required for Toilet Installation

  • Toilet with tank and seat
  • Bolt installation tool (optional but helpful)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Pliers
  • Wax ring with bolts
  • Bathroom/kitchen sealant
  • Toilet connection hose (most toilets require a hose approximately 1.2 × 2.1 cm)
  • Coins (a cheaper alternative to toilet shims)

If you are an experienced plumber or comfortable handling plumbing work, it is recommended to wear gloves and old clothes when removing the old wax ring and bolts.

1. Remove the Old Toilet, Bolts, and Washers

Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the old bolts. Avoid touching the old wax ring and dirt with your skin. Sewer gases may also be present around this area, so avoid breathing them.

You can prevent odors by placing a cloth inside the drain opening, but remember to remove it after finishing the installation.

2. Install the New Wax Ring and Bolts

Purchase a wax ring that includes bolts. These models are slightly more expensive but make installation easier and more secure.

Make sure the bolts are positioned correctly and firmly installed.

3. Place the Toilet Bowl on the Wax Ring

Lift the toilet bowl and place it carefully over the wax ring.

Make sure the bolts fit exactly into the holes on the toilet base. Press the bowl down gently to create a watertight seal.

4. Install Nuts and Washers

Install washers and nuts on each bolt.

Avoid tightening the nuts too much because excessive pressure can damage the ceramic surface. The washer should preferably touch the porcelain surface.

5. Install the Plastic Covers

Install the decorative plastic covers over the bolts.

You can also use a small amount of sealant instead.

Tip: Many bathroom floors are uneven, which can cause the toilet to wobble. Small coins can be used underneath the toilet base to level it.

6. Level the Toilet

Use a flat-head screwdriver to slightly lift the toilet, then place one or more coins underneath until it becomes stable.

This prevents movement and wobbling during use.

7. Install the Toilet Tank

You can install the tank before permanently fixing the toilet.

This makes tightening the bolts easier, but the disadvantage is that the toilet becomes heavier and more difficult to position on the wax ring.

8. Tighten the Tank Bolts

Install the bolts underneath the tank and tighten the nuts carefully.

Do not overtighten them, as this may damage the ceramic. The rear bolts can be difficult to access, so an adjustable wrench may be useful.

9. Install the Water Supply Hose

Connect one end of the hose to the wall water valve and the other end to the toilet tank.

Measure the distance between the tank and the wall before purchasing the hose.

10. Install the Toilet Seat

Attach the seat using a screwdriver.

Buying the toilet and seat as a complete set is recommended because finding a perfectly matching seat separately can sometimes be difficult.

Plastic toilet seats are usually preferred for hygiene reasons and operate quietly.

11. Install the Plastic Bolt Covers

Place the covers over the bolts for a cleaner appearance.

These covers can also be removed during cleaning, making it easier to remove and clean the seat area.

12. Seal the Gap Between the Toilet and Floor

Apply sealant around the toilet base to prevent dirt and moisture buildup.

13. Open the Water Valve and Test the Toilet

Open the water valve and check all parts of the toilet for leaks.

You can also check how quickly the tank fills and make sure everything works properly.

Your western toilet installation is now complete.
